12/14/03

1:18 PM

Yo Tim you there?

Yo

Cool, great show last nite

Thanks man.u rocked

Whatchu up 2

About to shovel snow and go see Driscoll later

Cool that, I was wondering if you'd like to do an interview for antifolk.net?

1:20 PM

Of course

I'd be honored

Do you have time now or wouldja rather do it later?

I'll do it now if u want

Cool, let's go for it, give me a sec

Ok

I just put up some tea

Nachi was on the horn

Oh yeah?

And u know what's crazy

What

I'm drinking tea right now and my father's license plate says capt doc (ed.note-Lach was using screenn name-capt lach)

Lol!

We got that synch goin on

Yeah I see

I met some lady I think her name was Mary and she said u told her to come to the show

Could be

U know too many peeps

Ook, we'll just do this as a chat then I'll cut and paste ok?

Ok

All right, lach here with antifolk.net's first chat/interview, and we are here with Timothy Dark. Hey, Tim.

What's up lach?

Digging on the snow. It's beautiful looking out the window

Yeah it is.but I have to shovel it

My back not feeling it

Hmmm, good metaphor for the music business looks good until you got to start shoveling it!

1:30 PM

Did you hear today's headline about Hussein?

And you know we shovel like mad Lach

Yeah.they found him right?

He was probably in Bush's bathroom

Yup, he's captured.

Well, let's get to some Tim Dark questions

Aaight

Do you prefer being called Tim or Timothy

It depends how cool we are.

Lol

But we cool so...whatever u want.. Chicks call me Timmy I hate it unless they're pretty

In that case, Mr.Dark, how did you first stumble onto the Antifolk scene?

Ohhhh..good one

Well it was more like a trip...I fell and never got up....

Tell me more

Except to take the stage of course

I found it online...I was looking for open mics...I had a group at the time called Fallen Angelz

And

And we walked in there and u and David K were there and I was scared to get up there and rap in the middle of a bunch of guitar dudes

That was at an Antihoot

Did you get up that night?

Yeah we did and I remember we had a chant that went "When I say Fallen U say Angelz"

1:35 PM

Did the crowd respond?

Yeah they loved it...we got booked that night.... And u said "who knew that itsy bitsy spider would be a hit"

Lol

What were some of your first impressions about the Antifolk scene?

It was so hot man.... I never knew that there were a bunch of cats playing guitar in a backroom somewhere just like a bunch of cats somewhere else were rapping in a back room...I was blown away

I remember the first time I heard America

You mean I Love America (But She Don't Love Me)?

Lol

Yeah

( Ed.note-available on 2 albums

Lach's Blang! and Tim's Dark Journey )

U can get em at antifolk.net

Ok enough shamless pluggin

I mean shame

Lol

Hey, I finally get to ask a question I hate being asked...

Shoot

Is that your real name?

1:40 PM

Timothy?...lol

Touche

Dak comes from a bible verse amongst other things

Dark

Your raps talk alot about bible imagery. Were you raised in that tradition?

Well I went to Catholic school for 12 years while running the streets with some wild cats...graduated college.and later got back into religion...got in a cult and left...because I knew the deal

Which college did you attend?

So I was all over the board...now I'm all about God and unity

Lehman College in the Bronx

What was your major?

Psychology

Now I know how you can handle some of the people on the scene!

Lol

It works man

Your last album includes tracks with lots of artists from the scene

1:45 PM

Yeah...its a family thing this time larval organs Kathy Zimmer Cathy-ann, Amy hills.. yourself

Can I get some quick word associations about them from you?

Sure

OK...Larval Organs

Rock

Was it the full band?

Naw..it was tracks and Scott came they all came at separate times

They played a very cool set at northsix last week

Fragala and Loving and Cockroach came on different days

Scratch the first answer.. lol

Ok...Amy Hills

Angry sexy?

OK James Broughel

Quiet

I think he's turned into a damn good bass player

Yeah..James is underated

Well, that's cause he's so quiet

He made nothing but pain live.. we recorded it in his house

Very talented cat

Yeah but I saw James turn a speaker over on stage one time

Something boiling underneath?

Got to watch out for the quiet ones!

Yeah silent but deadly

He needs to come back

Ok Nicole Atkins

1:50 PM

Surprising

How so?

I didn't know she could blow like that

She ripped the song

Excuse me??

Oh

I knew

It

On the album Lach

Ok, for a second I thought I got a killer interview going!

Lol

Ok, Nellie McKay?

Hypnotizing

Was her part done in just one take?

Me and George were just bugging out staring at her when she sang the hook...yeah one take and she wanted to do it over and I said naw ma...its gooooood

Kid's got it!

Yeah ...no doubt

Ok, Lauren Echo

The voice

Ok Jessie Murphy

She has this sexy thing that lures u in when she sings

Blues

That girl makes the guitar talk

You seem to have a lot ladies around you!

I love women man

They listen..and they go all out for u

1:55 PM

Why do you think the Sidewalk/Antifolk scene is so sexually charged?

And your not competing with them most of the time

Big time

Its more of a homosexual theme now

At the club?

Yeah

Hmmm

I dont care ..more women for the straight dudes

There is def more of a gay scene now with the Flaming Sunday series

Yeah...true

Which I heard is doing well

That was your baby?

It just seems to be a very tolerant vibe. The scene has men/women/black/white/brown/asian/straight/gay/christian/jew

Just like it should be

Flaming Sundays was my idea after the Antisocial went belly up

Smart move

Thanks

No doubt

How can the scene bring in more black artists?

Lol

Maybe a field trip to Harlem

Chill

U just lost like 200 of em with that joke..lol

Fuck

If they see more Black people there then they will come

But seriously, the scene is still dominated by white collegey males and that frustrates me

2:00 PM

%75 of the sign-ups on a Monday fit that category

U want me to bring the thugs in? We can change that real quick

Lol

Lol

Naw your right.but I like it like that....I like being different

I was always the only Black dude with like 300 Puerto Ricans or white dudes or the only dude with a bunch of chicks....u stand out like that

Actually if the thugz got wordz then I'm down. I guess I've always divided people into whether that art was valid or not rather than the whole race/sex/religion crap

Smart man

Well see...most of the cats I know aren't gonna sit there and wait..they want it now man

People in general want instant gratification

A lot of first timers to the Antihoot are that way then it slowly dawns on them that there is a whole 'nother thing going on than "what number am I?"

Do you think your music has a better chance to be heard coming out the Antifolk scene than the straight-ahead hip-hop scene?

2:05 PM

I think that music had a better chance of mutating with an artist who's open minded on the Antifolk scene..and becoming a new form of music for all people not just the hood or a certain group

A lot of the white college dudes

Don't get to hear that stuff live

I was a lot of people first exposure to rap

Peoples

As a live thing

Yeah..live on stage and on a personal level

What was your first exposure to rap?

Sugar hill

I still remember the rainbow swirl on the record

Grandmaster?

I used to try to rap when I was like 13

Yeah...he was sick. All those cats were. I actually met Melle Mell one time.

He made me look like Pee Wee Herman

He's jacked

I still remember the first time I heard 'The Message' and was so excited by it. Then I heard Blondie's 'Rapture' and was like "oh shit, they're gonna fuck it up already!

Lol

The man from mars is eating cars

2:10 PM

Then I heard Public Enemy and thought 'Great they got it back!'

Lol

They were so influential man

Do you foresee yourself ever doing anything more like a ballad? Guitar and singing (not necessarily you on guitar)

The messages are leaving us...there are fading from the music

That's funny...I've been practicing singing a lot lately.... the singing on Worldspin on the dark warrior album was me...a lot of people don't know that

Cool!

And me and Lady Nicole have this duet thing on 'Pain' now

She tears up that stage

Yeah she's a monsta

You have a sense of theatre on stage. You've done some acting?

I did an indie film called The Death Cartel.... I played a rapist and a gangsta...I did drive-bys and all that...I also done background on Spiderman..... OZ and a some TV shows

Spiderman the movie?

2:15 PM

Yeah...you can see me in the scene where Mary Jane is getting yelled at by her boss from the diner..... Its funny cause he's (her boss) is from the same block as me in real life

Cool!

As we come to the close of 2003, any events over the past year, on the scene or personally, that stand out for you

Wow.so many things

Just a few off the top?

Larval Organs playing with no drummer.. Joie with a band..the joke u told about nachos....Nachi's wardrobe thang....Red Jacket at the hardrock cafe....the last few shows we did and the crowds reaction

Cool

Ohhhhhhhh

The bob Dylan CDs u got me cat..im playing em now

I know it puts you in a spot because you don't want to leave anyone out

Yeah it does

Well be here all night

Yeah, I'm trying to trick you into writing some 'regular' songs

Ill miss driscolls show

Why trick me?

Dylan's Positively 4th Street is basically a rap

Yeah ..true

He sorta raps a lot

You're right...no tricks

2:20 PM

Just treats

Ok, I know ya gotta go, let me ask you one or two quickies

Ok

First album you ever bought?

The soundtrack to the Let do it again with Jimmie walker

Best concert you ever saw?

To Lets do it again

That's hard

The first Summer Jam

Who performed?

Wu Tang Tribe called Quest

It was crazy I had front row seats..that was real hip-hop

What are some goals for the New year?

2:25 PM

Get a lot of press....add a DJ to the set...pack the Mercury Lounge and North 6 to the door...

Buy my parents a new house

I can see that all happening for you. Thanks for being my first on-line interview. People should know they can order your CD DARK JOURNEY here at antifolk.net and also check out your artist page. Enjoy the snow, bro.

Thanks man...u be safe....Holla at ya boy

See ya at da Hoot

No doubt...Monday at 730

Cool---lach out.

One love
